Auroa School Kickstarters: Part One

Group: The 4 iPads

Innovation: Students have used Tinkercad to  make adjustments to the iPads holder that is created using the main interface.

While this was the creation process the students were able to use the designs and their Tinkercad experience to adapt them by altering the size to fit either iPads or iPhone stands.    The next  stage was for the students to consider how to add additional features to the stands so they were not run of the mill basic stands.

Personalisation: The designs were made with examples where a message was sunk into the base of the stand.   The name of the person was also included as a major feature on the front of the stand.

Group: Auroa All Blacks

Innovation: Students used Tinkercad to create unique key rings for a range of individuals.   The student are able to make unique key rings that are not available elsewhere.  As an additional feature the students made the decision to look at producing these using glow-in-the dark filament.    The students were able to use Tinkercad independently.  There were numerous examples of these available online that the students were able to use for a design.

Personalisation: The very nature of these prints meant that they were individualised with the name featuring on the key ring,

3D Printed Stands: iPads and iPhones

 

Challenge: To show innovation and creation to produce a unique suitable for a student market day.

Background: This is the focus for our big school event this year a school market day showing innovation and creativity.

We have put our students into business groups and each of these groups has been tasked with some key questions - how can they use technology and innovation to produce something that is creative, unique and personalised.

One of our groups is focussed on having iPhone stands and iPad stands for various devices.   This group has used the Tinkercad design template and then altered it to meet their design needs (which in this instance was to adapt it for the different devices).   The personalisation of the stands has come in the form of lettering at the front, sunk into the sides and also a design feature on the back.

The student was also challenged with design task of making something that was unique and creative.   In this instance the student who created the project, who is a Y3 student, so a student who is seven years old, wanted to have the hand reaching out from the back of the design.

The 'iPads are the best' slogan at the back was intended to be more of a example of what could be done rather than something that needed to feature for the design (and a point of difference for the selling process will be the personalisation of this and other text).

We previously had created numerous iPad stands including this one with built in storage from 2018.   Another version of this was completed in 2019 with a slightly different design.

A secondary project and potential product came from the same process, however the base design was adapted by the student for an iPhone stand.  We have produced a number of iPhone stands in the past, which you can locate via the search bar on the right hand side of this blog.

In this example the phone stand has had a similar process undertaken to ensure that it is completed successfully.   This means as well as the basic stand shape there is a persons name built into the base of the design, where the phone sits, the back as a personalised message and the addition of some basic graphics and details.

Size: There are two seperate prints in this project.  The iPhone is of course the smaller one measuring 80mm wide and 80mm deep.   It was also 80mm high and the wedge extended out 20mm and the lettering and illustrations raised 5mm from the back of the design.  It took two and a half hours to print.

The iPad stand measures 120mm across is 90mm long and 90mm high.    The wedge was 20mm high and the graphic at the back of the stand measures 10mm out.   
The iPad stand took four hours to complete.   Given the dimensions of the prints, the purpose of the print these are able to function as required.

3D Printed iPad Stand

Challenge: Student wanted to create an iPad stand for themselves to use in the classroom.
Background: Student was looking to create an original design in two steps, the second being to personalize the design with details such as their name and objects of interest.   The student has had limited experience with 3D Printing having produced or contributed towards other projects however this is the first time that the student wanted to take the lead and design something for themselves.  A challenge for the student from the teacher was for the design to have minimum rafting (supportive/waste PLA) to ensure that the structure was sound. A key factor in this design was the intention for the secondary printing of the name and the additional material, which will be done in a different colour to highlight or make the design stand

Level of Difficulty: Medium - this is a straightforward design which is intended to have a very specific purpose reflected in the design size and the printing time.  The additional material is intended to be letter and basic shape design in a different colour to stand out and contrast with the dark blue.
Time frame: Sixteen hours - given the dimension this is the minimum that was required for this sort of print. 
Size:   The front of the design measures 150mm across.   The block that is at front of the design is 30mm by 25mm (and 150mm long).   The design had a length of 140mm.   The design rises 130mm at the back of the stand to hold the iPad in place.   These dimensions are in place to maintain and hold an iPad of any size.
What we would do differently: Nothing - this design has worked perfectly from the design process, the teacher requirements of minimum PLA rafting has been met exceptionally well.    The next challenge for the student is to design and create the additional printing for the decoration.

3D Printed iPad Stand

Challenge - For student who is nine years old to create an original iPad Stand to give as a gift to another student.    No teacher input (design) into this project, design, creation from scratch.
Background: This student has been responsible for several high quality designs and projects this year, including this 'deluxe' iPad stand featuring a Unicorn as part of the design.   This project was intended for an older recipient, as a result of which other than the penalization on the rear of the design (see below) was deliberately kept to a minimum.   The student as noted above was responsible for every aspect of managing the project from initial design and concept, the Tinkercad creation of the design, the checking and the proofing of the design (consulting wiht another student to ensure that it would be a successful print).   The sole responsibility of the teacher was to print the project and suggest that two different PLA plastic were used to highlight the 'EBS" font/title that was on the back inside the speech bubble.

Level of Difficulty: Medium.   These designs have been printed in considerable variation and number in Room Six this year.   The students have continued to refine and improve their design minimizing the amount of rafting (and waste plastic) and using a mixture of combining PLA colours to produce lettering and features that stand out.    These are being produced to a high degree of skill able to work with a variety of iPads and including storage and details.   These are being produced with increasing skill, based on the work of the other students.  Its not a task for the faint hearted but when it works (like this) it produces something that has a lot of use that is highly durable and successfully completed the task.
Time frame: Twenty One hours for the base.   There would have been some flexibility had the student decided to include a draw in the base or reduce the width and the depth of some of the sides etc.

Size: This design was 130mm across at the front.   The front bar to stabilize the iPad is 40mm in length, 20mm consisting of the base and a further 20mm for a bar.   The base of the stand has a length of 120mm.   The back of the stand has a storage box dropped into it with dimensions of 50mm by 120mm.   The storage at the back rises 100mm from the base of the design.   This would be more or less the minimum requirements for a design such as this to work. 
What we would do differently/next steps for students: We have experiment by having the students insert draws or storage into designs like this, the student opted not to do so in this case.   We also could have used three different base PLA colours as the speech bubble shown above could have been printed in a separate colour to

3D Printed iPad Stands - Back to basics

Challenge: For students who are new to 3D Printing to start with something effective, simple but creating a useful tool that would be able to be used in the classroom in a positive way.
Background: Two students working on dual projects for the same purpose, with the ideas bouncing off each other.  Neither student had worked on this project before, although there were other examples in the classroom that they were able to see as a practical example and be influenced by.   We made the decision early on to work in small steps for both these students, taking the time to produce a base for the design and then attempting to add details in a different PLA as the print was nearing completion.  We felt this would give the students the opportunity to see the design and develop their spatial ideas accordingly.   One of the students was new to the classroom and this was his first individual design of
Green design in use.
note, the second student was a student who required and worked with learning support.   In both cases the students were able to use Tinkercad to manipulate the basic design and add their own names to the lettering.  The back of the green design originally contained or had a truck design on it, as printing progressed it was obvious that there would be problems with its rafting removal, as this would most likely cause the design to lose features, which it did.  The purple design had an apple on the back, again this design was not attached to the back of the iPad stand, however we made the decision to continue with the print as we were going to attach it after the fact with superglue. 
Level of Difficulty: Low - this is a basic design from the main Tinkercad Interface.   The shape manipulation is minimal, just needed to be in relation to holding an iPad Mini.    There is considerable scope for the design to have variation.   Neither dimensions (see below) were consistent, but the basic design principals remained.

Time frame: The green print was sixteen hours and the purple print was twelve.  This excludes the additional features of the print which are being selected to be added to the rear of the design.  Given the dimensions both could have been similar size and the 'green' one reduced, as they were serving the same purpose.  The standard 20% infill and 8mm nozzle settings as is the case for nearly every print on this site was applied.
Size: There are two distinct prints for this project.  The dimensions of the Green Print and the dimensions of the Purple Print.  The green print which is clearly the larger of the two had a front of 100mm.  It was 100mm long and 150mm high.  The block at the front was 10mm by 10mm by 10mm.    The block at the back that formed the basis for the name was 20mm across.   The lettering that formed the basis of the name was raised 5mm.   The purple 'Kade' print was 90mm across, was 70mm deep with a block of 10mm by 5mm.   The block at the back for the lettering was 120mm high.   The lettering was 7mm high.
What we would do differently/next steps for students: As a basic design these prints worked well and were a good introduction, particularly for the mainstream student.  We could look to included storage at the base of the design as we have profiled in other prints that are on this site.   Keeping the names simple and having them facing upwards, as shown was key in the success of the print.

3D Printed No Frills ipad and Utility Holder

Challenge: Student wanted to independently produce a combination iPad stand and storage unit that could be created as a first project independently. 
Background: This student was developing the idea of 3D Printing having seen numerous examples in the classroom.   She was not a student who had previously worked on a project.  The student is nine years old.   The shapes with the design were straightforward given that she was looking to produce something original that was workable.   On discussion with the teacher the student made the decision to include their name across the lip of the iPad stand.   Again it was a basic lettering task from the main Tinkercad interface which was very straightforward and allowed the student to easily produce it. 
Level of Difficulty: Medium - the dimensions of the design needed to work to complete the process.
Time frame: Nineteen hours.   Given the combination of storage at the back of the iPad stand (which for stationary as shown is considerable) and the stand at the front this would be an excellent use of time.   The standard default settings of a 20% infill with the printer running a 8mm nozzle. 
Size:   The print consisted of two main pieces.   You had the rectangular design at the front for the iPad stand, this was 120mm across and and had a 20mm rectangular block.    The block at the back was 10mm thick and rose 130mm.   The lettering for the name was two mm from this base.   The final part of the design was the circular stationary holder at the back.   This had a basic circle shape and was 110mm high.
What we would do differently: Minimal the student was extremely thrilled with the result and as a consequence didn't want to revise or change anything.   The print was robust and workable.
Next steps for student: Having successfully completed the task without any revision required the student needs to challenge themselves to move onto other projects.

3D Printed iPad Stand and Draw - Delux

Challenge: For student to create a working draw and iPad stand combination.
Background: Student inspired by other versions of these produced in the classroom, attempted to produce a delux version of this project.  The aspects that the student wanted to cover were having the iPad stand clearly personalised, with their name featuring on it prominently, having it function as a working iPad stand to use as a iPad Mini.  In addition to that the design also was to feature a draw at the base of the design, the draw needed to work in conjunction with the base.   The intention of the draw was to provide the opportunity for storage.   The project was completed by a ten year old student who was working with the 3D Printer for the second year.
Level of Difficulty: High - for the project to work the student worked completly independently of the teacher.   She had to have three attempts at the draw, which will be retained for use with other projects, however this resulted in a basic measuring error by the student. 
Timeframe: Twenty hours for the base and three hours for the draw.

Size:   The dimensions of the print were  95mm across, 125mm long and 35mm high.  There was a lip on the front of the design which essentially was a 10mm by 10mm rectangular block, which run along the front of the design.   The back of the design was 110mm high, 15mm thick.  The lettering stood out 10mm from the top of the design, which allowed the name to feature prominently.   The draw measured 83mm across, 105mm long and 15mm high.  Significantly it had a width of 3mm.  It fitted extremly well within the confines of the base of the design and allowed the draw to be accessed easily.   For this project to work these dimensions were the mimimum that would be required.
What we would do differently: The project was extremely successful, with the small matter of the reprints required to match the base with the draw.   However the draws are destined for another project and will still be used with a project.
Next steps for the student: To move on to other projects, this has been completed successfully.

3D Printed iPad Stand and Draw

Challenge: Student wanted to create an original print, a combination of an iPad stand for use in the classroom, personalised for the student who created it, to include a built in draw for storage.
Background: This student inspired by other designs in the classroom has demonstrated excellent design and creation using Tinkercad and 3D Printing.   In this design the student wanted an advanced iPad stand created to allow her to have her iPad stand.    The personalised part of the design was to have her name featuring prominently on the top, and placed an emojii on the rear of the stand.   The dimensions of this were created, measured and designed independently by the student, to have
a regular iPad Mini sit on the stand.   The design included a hollowed out part of the base.  When the initial print was completed a second part of the design was to create the draw which could be inserted into the base.  The student delibrately choose a different coloured PLA for the print for the draw.   The student again spent considerable time ensuring that the dimensions of the draw were correct so that it could work in conjunction with the base.
The student concerned in this projecy is a Y5 student who is ten years old.  She has had two years experience with 3D Printing.

Level of Difficulty - High.  The student is designing this project from scratch and had to take a number of factors into consideration - the size of the project relative to the goal, and the inclusion of a drawer to work in conjunction with the base.   The stand was produced with a hollowed base, the draw needed to sit inside the base and be able to be opened.

Timeframe: Twenty hours for the base - which had mininal rafting with the exception of the internal storage, which needed to be removed to allow the draw to be inserted.   The base would require a timeframe in this vicinity to be successful.   The draw took four hours, again with minimum rafting, and this would be a minimum requirement for this to be successful.   The combined time for the print would therefore be twenty four hours.  The printer was running on a 8mm nozzle and has a default setting of 20% infill inside
the print. 
Size: The base stand measures 100mm across and has a depth of 100mm.   The front of the base rises 50mm with the lip.   The rear of the stand was 110mm high and 20mm deep.   The naming letter on the top of the base raised 10mm.   The width of the sides of the base was generally 5mm.   The draw was of relatively similar dimensions.   It was 80mm and 100mm deep with a width of 3mm for the sides.   This was slightly smaller that it could have been.
What we would do differently: The students designed the draw to be somewhat loose as she was wanting it to be easy to open and close the draw, it could have been slightly larger to create a bigger fit, otherwise the design relative to the brief and challenge was extremely successful.
Next Steps for Student: To move onto other projects.  This project has been completed and completed to an extremely high standard, and while there are some very slight minor adjustments to be made the print itself is working extremely well.

3D Printed iPad Stand - Short Term

Challenge: For student to create an iPad stand that was able to be printed in the realistic shortest possible time.   Student had seen a number of classroom examples, many of which have been featured as posts shown on this blog.
Background: The student was interested in producing this to allow her to have her iPad on a stand.  She had seen various versions around our classroom and was looking at a way to minimise the size.   She was asked to personalise the design and she choose to put her name on the top (as shown) and an apple design on the back of the stand.   The naming aspect was produced from the basic Tinkercad design 'typing' feature.  The 'Apple' design on the reverse of the design was sourced from Tinkercad, using a generic search.  The student involved in the production of this 3D Print was a nine year old student who was creating her first major 3D project, and has been working with printers for the first time.
Level of Difficulty: Medium - this student was able to produce this successfully with her first version of the design.   The emphasis on producing as smaller iPad stand as possible directed the design in part.
Timeframe - Eight hours.  While this may seem considerable if you reference the print times of the other iPad stands, which were generally in the twelve hour range.  Given all aspects of the print it would not be practical to reduce the print design in size further, to still be able to have an iPad sit safely on it.
Size: The design was 100mm across, 120mm long and 20mm thick.   The design block at the rear of the design was 100mm high.  The lettering with the name of the student was 20mm high raising from the top of the block. 
What we would do differently: Minimal - the student created this design and was extremely pleased with the results, the design and the use of the iPad stand.   The student had a specific goal in mind with this process and was able to achieve this.  We have been mixing PLA with projects to produce different effects from the design.   The student choose not to use this technique and instead printed this as a single block, however on the balance of things this would be a minor consideration.
Next Steps for student: Given the success of the process the student needs to challenge herself to move onto other projects.

3D Printed iPad Stand (Delux)

Challenge: For student to create and personalise an iPad stand that was workable and could be used by the student in the classroom.
Background: Student has shown a talent and creation for using the 3D Printer in the classroom.   The student concerned is nine years old, having no prior experience but has spent a considerable amount of time designing projects working on ideas and creating them.   This is all being done in the students own time, with the student bringing completed projects into the classroom teacher, which then follows with a conference with the teacher, leading to discussions and then refining the projects.   This project was created by the student indepedently and she brought the completed project to the teacher which then printed it without any adjustments.

Level of Diffculty: Medium.   Student is nine years old and was able to produce the entire project using Tinkercad independently without any input from the teacher.  This is a reflection of the talent of the student, and this design is a little deceptive, as it consists of mainly basic shapes but has included additional features such as the unicorn which is featured on the back of the design.  These designs and getting the balance correct between the use of the printer and the creation of the design that are workable takes some refining.
Timeframe: Sixteen hours.   The print as shown above has considerable rafting required for the creation of the lip to balance the iPad.   This could have conceivably been reduced, the additions to the stand otherwise were a
minimum and this timeframe, given a 20% infill, 8mm nozzle would be nearly the minimum required.
Size of the Print: Width of 100mm.   A depth of 110mm.  The front of the print where the name is a block that is 20mm high, 20mm across and 100mm long.   The back of the print, where the unicorn is, was 20mm thick, 90mm high.   The final component of the stand is a overhang, from the back of the design with another 20mm block of similar dimensions to the front of the design.   Given the task, the opportunity for the print to be used as a stand for different sized iPads, this is an ideal size for this project.
What we would do differently: Very little, this project met the expectations of the brief, showed a degree of personalisation and is perfectly suited for the task that it was intended for.
Next steps for the student: This student is moving onto more challenging and difficult projects as this part of the project has been mastered.   The student needs to consider the removal of the rafting and the use of sandpaper etc to complete the presentation (and then potentially respraying it).

3D Printed iPad Mini Stand: Basic Model

Challenge: Student had an iPad Mini and wanted to create a stand for that device.  The student also had a cover for the iPad that she wanted to remain on the iPad, as some stands require the removal of the iPad to ensure that it fits on the stand for it.  Student intended to personalise this design by adding a symbol that she enjoyed.  Student is a ten year old student.
Background: Student has completed several prints and is in the classroom with other students a number of whom have produced iPad stands and projects during the course of the year.   Student had seen a variety of projects and used them for an inspiration for this project.  She used measurements from other iPad stands in the classroom to ensure that it would work.

Level of Difficulty: Low - this design can be completed by students in a very short timeframe, generally five to ten minutes.  The student had a variety of projects to work from in terms of design and size to use as a guide.   She choose not to personalise the design with her name as she had seen various name designs on projects and felt that the 'peace' emblem would be sufficient. 
Timeframe:   This print took ten hours to complete.    It was a straightforward design that had some additional features however they were minimal, hence the relative short print time compared to
some other designs in the series (which typically could have an additional two to three hours involved in thier print)
Size: the design at the front was 100mm across, and 140mm long.   The block which held the 'peace' symbol on the back was 120mm high from the base.    Given the purpose of this print the size would be about the minimum expected.   The depth of the print was 20mm in places conceivably
What we would do differently: Very little.  The student felt that the personalisation would be handled by having the peace emblem and otherwise wanted a print that would work.   Both these criteria were met by print and the finished product.
Next steps for the student: Student needs to move on to other projects at this project has been completed and does not require additional reworking or remodelling.

3D Printed Emoji Themed iPad Stand

Challenge: For student to create and personalise a stand to be used by the student in the classroom/home as a stand for an iPad Mini.
Background: Student was looking to create something original and had seen other examples in the series from students in the classroom.  She was intent on making sure it was more personalised that could be easily identified as hers.  The student who was involved in this print was ten years old.
Level of Difficulty: Medium - this was elevated from a basic print by the addition of two features that would be identified the emoji that was created and the name of the student on the base. We have been discussing with students the addition of extra features to these iPad stands (such as a bar for headphones) or additional storage.  Student opted not to do this as a result of the print being one of her first.

Timeframe: 12 hours.   This print had limited rafting (rafting is the additional printed material which is removed once the print has completed, in the picture shown, the rafting has been removed and allows for the overhang that you can see shown.  Given the need to balance the stand to ensure that the iPad stand serves its purpose, the minimum time length required would be reflected by this design.
Size: 100mm width for the base (front of the design).  Depth - 100mm.   The base was 20mm thick.  The name plate at the front of the stand (see photo) 30mm.  The base was 120mm high at the back, 10mm thick and included a

second block (as shown) that was 30mm by 100mm.   Finally the Emoji part of the design was created from scratch by the student (using basic shapes design from the Tinkercad Interface).  Realistically these dimensions would be the minimum that was required to successfully complete this project to ensure that the iPad stand will work.

What we would do differently: Minimal.   The lettering of the name of the student was a little uneven with its design, and would have benefitted from an additional plate to mount itself on.  The back of the design appears to be robust enough to comfortably have
an iPad resting on it.
Next steps for students: As noted the lettering while it was successfully requires some touching up to ensure that it achieves a finished look.   The student choose not to add additional features as stated (a stand or opportunity for the storage of headphones).

3D Printed iPad Stand 2018

Challenge: For student to create a working iPad stand for use in the classroom.

Background: Student was looking to design a stand for her iPad in the classroom, to allow it to be tilted and to have a storage space as part of the design for her headphones (button).   Student was also wanting to personalise her work by including her name as part of the design.  Student worked to design the holder for an iPad Mini.   She is ten years old.   Student used Tinkercad to create the main design features for this.  She had previously been in the classroom where another student had produced first a delux iPad stand model and another student had created a more detailed design that was also featured as a post on this blog.   This student was working independently and was less inclined to add additional features.

Level of Difficulty: Medium - this was a seriveable print that relied on particular angles specific to the Mini iPad.    The student minimised the complexity of the base. 
Timeframe: Eight hours - this is considerably less than the delux versions that were produced last year.   This is reflected in the relative deisgn simplicity.   This would be considered probably the minmum dimesions for this design to work, and have enough weight to hold the iPad in place.
Size: The main base for the print, the square was 100mm by 100mm.  The battery part of the design was an additional rectangle 50mm by 40mm.  The width of the print walls was universally 5mm.  The bar at the front to hold the iPad in place was 20mm high, and a square of 10mm.   The height of the design at the back, where the iPad rested was 90mm.

What we would do differently: The student had a specific goal in mind which as detailed above was to produce a working iPad stand and this was completed.   While there was little additional material added to the design (other than some of the delux models mentioned/blogged about previously).  The student has stated that they are not intending to repeat the print/process.
Next steps for students: More challenging projects to work outside of comfort zone to create unique and original project.  This design has successfully completed the task.

3D Printed Delux iPad Stand

Challenge: Student wanted to create a personalised iPad stand to support device use at home and in the classroom.  Student has designed a number of prints in the past and the intention was to include significant bells and whistles to improve its design and challenge the student.

Background: A completely original design, with additional features that were not included in the iPad stands that were developed earlier in the year, the link to these on this blog is here.  The student who created this design and printed it is ten years old.
Level of Difficulty: Medium - student wanted to incorperate a design with the stand, their name, a hole to store additional objects and have a working stand.  The student drafted and initial designs were challenged to be improved to include more features not combined together.

Timeframe: Ten hours. Given the size and the details in this project this represented a minimum time of print (where rafting for instance was at a minimum).  This was conducted with a 8mm nozzle on a regular print setting.
Size: The demensions of this print were slightly affected by the designs and not consistent throughout.  The base was 15cm in length and 7cm long.   The Minion design at the end of the stand was 6cm long and 6cm high.   The student cleverly included his name on the head of the minion and this formed the basis of the hair of the stand. 
What we would do differently: Nothing - the student created something unique that was a significant improvement on the previous designs in this series, the only significant feature that needed to be improved was the location of the hole for additional storage, depending on which item was stored the iPad itself would mean that it couldn't fit.  This location needed to be refined.
Next Challenge for student: to relocate the hole to a place on the iPad stand where it didn't have an issue with the lean of the iPad itself.

3D Printed iPad Stand - Delux

Challenge: To improve the design of the student created iPad stand.
Background: This was a follow up print to one previously designed by the student.  The student had created it independently but as a result of feedback was asked to personalise the stand and also this about providing extra support for the stand by the addition of a bracket at the back.

Level of Difficulty: Medium - the original print was a success but the challenge was to add value or additional features to a print that had already been successful.
Size: As previously stated, 80mmx 70mmx 60mm.
Timeframe: Eight hours with the addition of the brace and personalisation of the name, a two hour increase on the original.
Issues: the rafting provided by Cura 2 software was difficult to remove perfectly from the base.
Process: All additional changes to design were carried out by using Tinkercad and then imported again into Cura 2.
What we would do differently: Nothing.  This is a considerable improvement on the original design (which also worked fine) as a display piece and a conversation piece about 3D Printing this is an excellent example of something positive and there is clear progression for the student from his first original design (name plate) to create something with an expressed purpose.

3D Printed iPad Stand

Challenge: Once the name plates were completed the students were encouraged to come up with an original design that served a practical purpose, something that they could use.  They were give

n free reign to come up with any design however the printing of designs was dependant on a filtering process.  Students worked on design in thier own time.
Background: This was a progression from the 'name plate' as mentioned above.  The student wanted to create a stand to hold his iPad in the classroom so it would stand up.
Level of Difficulty: Low-Medium - this task was dependant on the student creating a stand that would would and needed preparation and measurement to ensure that it worked successfully.
Issues: None - this print worked perfectly, however on discussions there were ideas to personalise it (including the students name as a plate on the front) and strengthen the back of it.   It is robust but including a back rod or brace built into the design would allow pressure to be applied to it.  Student was thrilled with result and the project created a buzz with the creator and the other students in the classroom.

Size: As shown in the photographs a width of 80mm a height of 70mm and 60mm across.  These would probably be the minimum print sizes for the iPad holder to serve its purpose.
Timeframe: Six hours with an Ultimaker 2+ on regular print setting.
Process: The student has shown a desire and creativity to come up with ideas independently of teacher input.  By allowing a print run of an independent project the idea is to encourage the student (who is nine years old) to continue to think of practical applications and uses for the 3D Printer.  Tinkercad was used for the students design, and then the file was converted into Cura.   The print was then completed on an Ultimaker 2+.   (All prints on this site from this point forward unless otherwise mentioned will now follow this process as all machines at our school are now upgraded to Ultimaker 2+ with the newer version of the (free) Cura Software.  We are also using standard print settings and regular filament unless otherwise specified.  The student is already re-designing this print based on feedback given to include his name to personalise it and a brace that will sit at the back of the stand.
