Revising and reworking a Print

Challenge: To rework and redesign a previous creation to ensure that it develops its detail and successfully adapts to meet its brief.

Background: This the student reviewed the design (shown left in the photograph) and revised it.   The original post was featured on this blog here.  The student wanted to develop the item as phone holder.   The student had realised after testing that the phone needed a lip to be introduced into the design to ensure that a phone did not slip off the print.

The student also wanted to introduce several other features on the design.  They included in the revised version the large stars which were placed on both ends of the design.   As this print is now intended to be a gift for the upcoming Mothers Day.   The print now has 'Mum' on the front of the design and 'Happy Mothers Day' written on the back.

All of these adjustments were completed by student independently and have greatly increased the

Level of Difficulty: Medium - the student was adjusting the design to meet the intended brief and purpose for the design.

Size: As per the original design 130mm by 70mm by 60mm.   Essentially the same as the original with dimensions not affected by the additional features.

Cost/Price:
The original print used 87g of PLA filament to complete the revised version of the print used 113g which included additional lettering, the lip etc.   The cost for the original design was $1.75 the adjusted price for the revisions for this print the price has increased per unit to $2.83.   This has been calculated by Bambu Studio Labs inbuilt software.

Timeframe:  The original print took two hours and ten minutes to complete.  With the additional details added into the print this increased the duration of the print to four hours.

What we would do differently/Next steps for the student:

The revisions with the print have been very important to ensure that the purpose of the design has been met.  The addition of the 'Mothers Day' theme for the design has also given it a a specific purpose.   There are not more additions that will be required for this print.

Printing Projects Currently Underway in Junior Classroom

As detailed previously on this blog our term three students started with a series of challenges.  The challenges graduated in difficulty starting with a pair of earrings, a phone stand based around a template from the main Tinkercad design panel and a third challenge.

The third challenge involved creating housing for a pencil sharpener.   The initial prints based around a shape, however now the students are refining and testing their ideas and working on a next level.   In the example shown left the student has completed successfully the base part of this project including a location to insert a pencil and space for the shavings from the pencil to be held in once the pencil sharpener has been used.   The student has started to experiment with different versions of lids that could then lock onto complete the project.  The student has also determined that she can create an additional layer on the lid of the box (so in this instance not to have a single, simple flat design but to build something into the project to further personalise it or add detail.  There are a large number of examples that have been featured on this blog which can be located by using the search bar right and searching the codeword 'box'.

Name Badge: Next Level Developments.   In this example shown left the student has the idea of a basic name badge and attempted to add layer and details to it to make it stand out more.

The student has opted to build layers to create a scroll like affect with the design, added a ring for the connection (which in previous examples would typically be a hole through the base of the design) and finally has added a flourish at the bottom of the design to further heighten the presentation (before it was subsequently spray painted to decorate the entire project).   This print took two and a half hours to print which was primarily based around the size or width of it while not obvious this measures 20mm across.   The student then decorated it as shown.   A issue potentially to be discussed is the ring used to attach the badge.   It currently is built on top of instead of inside the print - and there is a question of how robust this will make this for the gear bag it is intended.

Shown left are two designs from the range of phone stands that the class are working on.   There will be a seperate post about these items as they are the second in a series of challenges that have been put forward to the students in the classroom.

The size of some of these has been worked on and engineered by the students to try and work out the size that is still workable but also allows the stand to function to hold a phone.

Further innovation has been developed by students completing tasks such as pushing a shape through the design to the other side as shown by the position of the heart in the design on the right.   The lettering is slightly more of a challenge as the font have elements in the capital 'M' and lower case 'm' that need to have the sides removed while they stay intact.  This is very challenging to do as the removal of the rafting (by the teacher) usually results in the removal of some of the key elements of the lettering.  We have again been using some of the previous examples contained here on the blog as points of discussion related to this project.   You can see information about these prints by clicking on the search box or looking at examples here.

3D Printed Cellphone Stand - Short Term Prints

Above: Design shown in profile
Challenge: Student wanted to create a specific object -  a stand for a cellphone that the student owned.  He wanted to personalize it and put a theme into its base.  This was his first ever print and the student involved is nine years old.
Background: As part of the process of designing 'Christmas' themed decorations in our classroom and now across the school, we also have been trying to expose students to the technology and getting them thinking about projects that they might be able to create to solve a problem or have a purpose to make something work that was currently needing to be completed.  This print came out of that as the student concerned wanted a stand for his cellphone and felt that it needed to be personalized.   As it was also part of a series of festive decorations the student decided to add the star and the Christmas Tree as shown above.   Also of note in the design was the way the name was
Above: Lettering clearly visible
created for the print.  The lettering was large and the student, despite it being his first ever print, wanted to have the lettering sunk down into the base of the design. All in all the student was producing a piece of work that had a specific purpose, it was their first ever design (for a nine year old) and the print was extremely successful.
Level of Difficulty: Medium - this worked in unison with the sum of its parts.   The print worked perfectly for what it was, its one of those prints that is simple, but extremely effective and is successful that it appears to be straightforward (for instance a cellphone fits perfectly on this as a stand) but it requires a successful print to do so.

Time frame: Four Hours- given the purpose of what was required this is the absolute minimum print time that would be required.   Testing of this stand with a regular cellphone had it working perfectly but with very little space either side of the phone, hence this would be an absolute minimum time required to complete the print.   There was not rafting what-so-ever with this print.
Size: The print was 75mm across and 70mm deep.   The block at the back for the leaning of the cellphone was 40mm high, 20mm wide and 75mm across.   Given the dimensions of a cellphone there is not more that could be reduced from this, obviously a slightly larger phone would require a larger base, this is perfect for a regular cellphone.
What we would do differently/next steps for students: This was a first attempt at a student producing something with a very specific goal in mind, as is mentioned throughout the print the student was extremely pleased.   The 'Christmas' theme of the design came about as it was created during the festive season, perhaps something less seasonal could have been designed.
